For Right-Hand Drive Models
This is a Modified EXCHANGE Item with all NEW ALL-METAL BUSHES. A custom-made upgrade, free moving and virtually No Freeplay! (typically 0.04mm or 2 thousandths of an inch).
The original nylon bearing system is completely removed and replaced by machined metal bushes for almost the entire length with zero twisting action, and the mounting plate modified to accept a 25% larger hinge bolt. The relay is a significant part of the linkage assembly and this upgrade eliminates freeplay in this area, leading to a more precise selection of the "gate" and gears.
The relay unit is supplied greased, pre-adjusted and ready to fit. It SHOULD NOT be disassembled once set up. A Grease nipple is fitted to allow periodic greasing although the use of self-lubricating means this is not really necessary any more
NEUTRAL SPRING:
NOT all units are fitted with neutral selector springs (as shown in the photo). This was Removed from later model linkages (approx date 1990 manufacture) when the gear lever was modified. SEE NOTE BELOW.
Do you need a Neutral Spring?
ONLY if your van linkage already has one fitted, i.e. if your existing relay has one fitted then use a modified relay with one fitted. If you do not have one fitted please be advised that the spring was only used on the linkages circa 87-90 manufacture, after which the gear lever was modified (again) and the spring removed. You should NOT fit a spring where there is not already one (ie the later models) as it makes the gear lever much stiffer in the left-right movement.
If you require a neutral spring but do NOT have an exchange one on your exchange relay then this incurs an additional £5 charge to cover the cost of the spring.
VIDEO DEMONSTRATION ON YouTube (approx 5 mins comparing Relay before and after).
